Flexible and creative, WriteShop is an ideal homeschool writing program! WriteShop lessons give students a chance to practice various kinds of writing, including creative writing, expository writing, and narrative writing. Assignments teach descriptive and informative paragraphs as well as first-and third-person narratives, important techniques of style, and self-editing. Students learn to choose vivid, descriptive words and vary their sentences in order to build strong paragraphs. With each lesson, they learn and practice new skills, apply them to their current writing project, and edit and revise the composition several times. By the end of the lesson--after brainstorming, writing, editing, and revising--they'll have a polished paper to be proud of! Students write one composition over a two-week period, revising it twice. Incremental in approach, exercises are designed to be approached consecutively, building upon previously learned material. Students edit their papers methodologically, using a Writing Skills Checklist tailored to the individual lesson. The WriteShop 1 Student Book is also comprised of a softcover and loose leaf pages. While written directly to the student, the sold-separately WriteShop Teacher's Manual for WriteShop I & II guide is still needed to teach the course, as the teacher's guide contains the teacher-specific instructions, keys, and evaluation notes. In this student book, lessons provide examples, lesson directions, and exercises----of which some can be completed in-book, if desired, and some which must be completed out-of-book. Copying and Dictation exercises may be assigned by the student, or WriteShop offers the sold-separately WriteShop I Copying and Dictation Exercises booklet. 4th Edition. Recommended for the average student in grade 7-10, or a bright 5th or 6th grader who's working with a parent; average 5th or 6th grade students may also spread the course out over two years. At the pace of one lesson in two weeks, students will finish both WriteShop I & II in two years.
